What was once supposed to have been the flagship of an entire chain of 30 indoor theme parks, one that would have eventually encircled the globe, DisneyQuest will be closing in 18 months. Then this 5-story tall, 100,000 square foot structure -- which towers over the West Side section of Downtown Disney -- will be gutted & turned into a brand-new ESPN Zone." I'm surprised at this! I thought it was really popular!
I guess we'd better make the most of it this summer then :(

Not surprised...they haven't significantly updated it since it opened. I always liked it, but I don't know if it really was a big moneymaker for Disney. There are no "profit centers" once you get thru the main entrance. Its not like the theme parks where they get you with souvineers, food, and drinks everywhere you turn. I'm disappointed in Disney for letting this vision die. They should have made it more like Dave and Busters with dining and adult beverages. Then I'm sure it could have been a huge success.

My DS is going to be soooo disappointed - we both loved this and were looking forward to going back on it - the cybercoaster rocks!
Please, Disney can you put the cyber coaster somewhere else! :sigh:

Maybe they will Kazza? Sometimes when WDW dismantles something, they put portions of it in other places. When they took apart the Disney at Home Store, they put some of the things in other shops.

For every 100 stories he publishes, 1 might come true... and then claims fame to it....
It is the tabloid of the Disney sites......

I never really enjoyed the amount of money that i paid for disney quest. All I ever did was the simulation coaster and the animation academey. Now I must say though that every time I have been to disney I have done the animation academy and always bought my pics, it will be dissappointing to not have that anymore, I would think that they could move this over to mgm and have it be a big hit. I know that they already have something over there, but the one in disney quest is so much better.
ETA: woohoo I just noticed my countdown timer, only 10 more days!!!!!!1

I've never been in all my trips because I pictured lots of waiting in line to do things & that just didn't seem fun. If I gotta wait in line I want a real ride, not a virtual one. I still find it hard to believe it will close down. Could be but I'll believe it when I see it....or don't see it I guess.

Oh, that's exciting
The one at Disneyland's Downtown Disney is great, I can just imagine it could be even better.

Haven't been to DQ but I LOVE the idea of a ESPN SportsZone :D

April 28th, 2006, 05:57
I knew you would :D Can you imagine all that space dedicated to dozens of screens... I think there is enough space to even have a batting cage
Oooh, private rooms (15-20 people) for watching games...

Batting cages? How awesome! I'd be in my happy place

I would not be surprised if DQ closed. When it first opened (and DS was younger), we really liked DQ--there were lots of really cool things to do. We liked the way it was priced when it first opened. The concept behind it was great--I thought it might be a great place for teens to hang out in the evening.
Subsequent visits--Disney didn't seem to be spending money on upkeep. Some of the things we noticed:
My favorite attraction was the Buzz Lightyear asteroid game--the one where you and a partner would get into a capsule and roll around the room and collect "asteroids" (balls) and then shoot them at the other capsules and make them spin. The first time we visited, there were lots of asteroids. After that, they just didn't seem to replace them and there were very few left. Plus, it seemed like there were always capsules out of service.
They had those computers in the dining area--they were difficult to work and they never seemed to update them.
They seemed to just shut down certain areas. It always seemed to me that they were just not putting very much money into the upkeep of DQ. My feeling is it seemed like it was being neglected. And, the price kept going up...
We have enjoyed the ESPN zone at DL. (But, I think one of the reasons we like it is because the close proximity to rest of the DL complex. You can spend a little bit of time there doing one or two activities and then go do do soemthing else. :D ) So, maybe the new change to ESPN zone will be a good thing...

I love DQ and so does DS. We'd be really disappointed if it closed as we always spend a good few hours in there on each trip. I love the Jungle Cruise and the Pirates Adventure and even DH enjoys the arcade games. It's a great place for older kids to hang out on their own but I agree that Disney haven't really put any money into DQ over the last few years.

Oh shame I enjoyed DQ, but there is still plenty to do elsewhere and they could always move some of the stuff to EPCOT or MGM.

I had always planned to do this in the future. For us we just never found that we needed something else to entertain us other than the parks, shopping DTD & swimming & resort/pool hopping. We haven't done miniature golf or water parks yet either. One of these days!

DQ is something we have never done - however I think it would more appealing to me as a new sports bar especially if it showed some British soccer:whistle:

:( sad but probably true - its all about the money at the moment
I expect they will move cyber space mountain to EPCOT - probably where the character meet place is at he moment or possibly one of the Innoventions buildings.
Or IMHO you could move the whole shebang to where the universe of energy is

I hope it doesnt close. Ive only been to WDW once, and DisneyQuest I found amazing!
I also liked that I could use the internet terminals in the Wonderland Cafe on the top floor to send E-Mails home instead of phoning my parents.

We went about four times during our trip. It was heaving every time. Claire even broke the record on the basketball machine (the second one in next to the smaller basketball game is broken / controllable by someone elsewhere, and everyone once in a while just goes up to 99 regardless of what you're doing!).
And they have a cheescake factory. Mmmm... cheesecake.
I can't see them closing this place. They already have a big ESPN place at boardwalk. I think they'll keep it open as long as people pay $30 a pop to get in!!

Yes, this was verfied as a rumour some time ago. There are no plans to change or close DQ as of this time.
