I've read on a few threads that Deet is good as an insect repellant but does it really work? DH went camping in Scotland last summer used this and was still covered in bites when he got home, he also said it was really smelly

How much DEET was in it. You need 100% DEET for it to be effective and just spray on clothes.

I'm not sure, he had bought it from a outdoors retailer, I think it was 100%, perhaps deet works better on different types of bugs?
I really do get bitten badly in Florida, so if this does work there thats great :)

Thanks, I'll give it a try
Did it smell? I have a vision of the four of us walking around Disney being given a wide berth, perhaps it may get us to the front of the lines though as everyone runs away .

Depends upon the brand you purchase (the smell, I mean). Some have a very pronounced odor, and other brands are nearly odorless.
DEET is meant to work mostly on mosquitos and some biting flies. There is something vicious called a black fly (in the north east) that it's not very effective on, so perhaps that is what was going on in Scotland (an insect that wasn't effected much by the DEET).
Deep Woods Off is one brand here, as is Bullfrog (or something like that) that works well. Regular "Off" works ok, but isn't as strong as the Deep Woods. Oh, Cutter's too. That one works quite well.
They are easily purchased at nearly any shop that sells groceries, sundries and the like. I think Disney even carries some. (But the cost would be prohibitive there).

Midgie. I'll bet that is quite like the black fly of the northeast. Not much stops it but being covered up. Bites hard too.
Skin So Soft does seem to work very well for some people. I can't use it, but I know others have had excellent results with it.

Due to nature of my job, I work outside, in the West of Scotland during the long summer evenings, on Thursday there, the midgies are back. We have found only the Avon Skin So Soft BATH OIL is any good, the other products in the range do not work. Our conclusion, you smell dreadfull but the midgies drown in the oil slick you are wearing, its not the odour that puts them off. On a brighter note when you get home, you are half ready for a shower, just add water.

I was using the SSS lotion perhaps that was why. The bath oil does mess up your bath making it terrible to clean but hey if it stops me being bitten it sounds good. I even got bitten at home last week hanging out the washing .

Even the dry bath oil version fails to work. I have never tried the bath oil in a bath, but it showers off just fine.
I do commercial firework displays, so by the time I get home a shower is not a bad thing, the smoke clings to your skin and smells more than DW allows.

So do you just rub it on then? I am wondering how that would work with the suncream, however I could do this in the evenings

Sun Cream - lol - We live in the West of Scotland, the issue has never arisen. The bath oil has a very fluid consistency, I guess you could just throw it on top of the sunscreen early evening.
We tend to use the spray block that came out a couple of years ago, so there is no white mess to mix with if you apply insect protection immediately after.

lol i was going to say that it'd take a really strong repellent to keep away the midgies, don't think they're fussy what they eat! I might have to give the avon stuff a shot tho.
