Disney losing appetite for fast food
Marketing ties with McDonald's hit lean times

For 10 years Disney and McDonald's appeared to have a beautiful billion-dollar marriage. Happy Meals bore little figurines of Nemo, Mr. Incredible, and Peter Pan.
But no more. This is one relationship that's ending because of the children.
Disney is not renewing its billon-dollar, cross-promotional pact with the fast-food giant, which ends with this summer's release of Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. The reason, in part, say multiple high-ranking sources, is the family-friendly entertainment giant wants to distance itself from fast food -- and its links to the epidemic of childhood obesity.
Disney's not the only studio that thinks french fries loaded with trans fats may be too hot to handle.
DreamWorks is working with McDonald's to promote Shrek 3, due out in 2007. But according to one top-level studio source, there is already internal debate about whether the lovable green ogre should steer clear of chicken nuggets and Big Macs in favor of the healthier fare on McDonald's menu, such as salads. Compounding the issue is the fact that Shrek is, after all, overweight.
The ending of the McDonalds-Disney partnership comes at a time when the processed and fast food industries are under fire on a number of fronts because of growing concerns about childhood obesity. Just last week, former President Bill Clinton succeeded in yanking sugary sodas from elementary school campuses.

This would make sense if Disney only sold healthy food, but you can get food just as bad for you at all the parks.

McDonalds have been forever blighted by Super Size Me, which despite being a very good documentary, was a bit unfair on the old chaps. If you ate nothing but KFC or Burger King for 30 days exactly the same thing would happen, as it would I expect if you ate nothing but those huge Turkey Legs from Disney!

Would have to assume then that WDW would also improve its counter service meals to provide healthier choices.

 Oh please (Disney), I read that Disney and McDonalds had agreed to go their separate ways a year or two ago, mainly because Disney felt that McDonalds wasn't promoting Disney's movies enough.
Disney's not the only studio that thinks french fries loaded with trans fats may be too hot to handle.
What about that stand near Splash Mountain that sells only McDonalds fries :D
...and I'll have one of those Sausage and Egg McMuffins, too.

I am very glad to hear this news. I do not like fast food and neither do my kids. Salads and fish are my preferences and on our first visit to Florida we found it very difficult to find anything but fast food at the counter service restaurants. I took the kids to a McDs for the first time in their lives two years ago and they hated every moment of it. We left the food and were out in less than 5 minutes. It was dreadful.Apologies to all you fast food lovers.

McDonalds is
I'm with you on that one Dawn - and just walking in the door puts me in a bad mood. However, the kids love it but have only very occasional visits.
None of us like it. The last time I ate in one was at Gatwick in December 2003 because my brother's kids wanted pancakes. The orange juice was drinkable but that was about it.
A little while back I found myself needing food with only a Burger King nearby. I had a metallic taste in my mouth for 2 days after eating something which masqueraded as a cheeseburger.

That did make me laugh! :D Isnt it great to see counter service restaurants such as Seasons at The Land and Tusker House in AK where real food is served. The move away from processed fast food is a step in the right direction IMHO.

McDonalds isn't bad at all, they get singled out. No-one has a go at fish & chip shops, but you'd be a lot worse off if you ate fish & chips every day as opposed to McDonalds.

Im sorry, but I think their food is appalling, so I suppose it is subjective. Fish and chips are not the sort of food you should be eating on a regular basis either. We as a family have always eaten freshly prepared food every day. Even when I was working with four kids, I could still do it.
The demand now has moved away from the type of food that McDs serve, although they have made changes too. They will have to change an awful lot more not to continue losing trade. They part own 'Pret a Manger' so I think they could well look at that operation when thinking of what direction to go in. The more freshly prepared real fast food at WDW the better (at least for us) :D

I didn't mean it was tasty! I meant everyone singles them out, including Morgan Spurlock in Super Size Me. But they are no worse or better than hundreds of establishments. If you went to Gordon Ramsays restaurant in Chelsea for every meal for a month it wouldn't do you too much good!

I realize that Fried Fish and chips are not a healthy every day diet, but trust me ANY KIND of FISH is better than the burgers that McD's serves, well except their own fish. :D

No - you are right. I tend to avoid them all but if I had to have a fatty treat it would be fish and chips and of course the chips would have to be thick!
I suppose because the thread relates to McDs that is why I mention them. It could equally relate to any of the rest. I am a woman on a mission! lol

For the record I never go to McDonalds because I think the food is yacky poo. But I go to Burger King 3 or 4 times a year because it's much nicer food, although possibly no healthier.

we went to Burger King on Saturday and all had a flame grilled chicken salad even with the dressing it was only 220 cals, along with a bottle of water I thought that was quite healthy:)

I only have the Double Whopper with extra grease though!!
I don't like fast food but I also have all sorts of ethical reasons why I won't eat it. The way the giant corporations operate. The destruction of the small farmer. Political lobbyists who bribe congressmen to stop legislation on stricter food standards. Your really don't want to know what's in that Big Mac.

Actually, you wouldn't want to know what's in most of the foods that you eat, like hot dogs (you really don't want to know). The only time you can really know what went into what you're eating is if you grow it yourself.
I don't frequent McDonalds that much anymore, and I have stopped ordering fries altogether. If I eat fast food, I like Wendy's for their chili, Arby's for their Deli Sandwich, and if I feel like indulging myself, I will get a Whopper Cheese without ketchup, extra onions, at BK

I love the egg, bacon, cheese bagel thing too!
Personally I love a good McD's french fry, but I tend to stay away now, because of the wasted calories that they have! From one setting at any of the fast food places I could eat my entire calorie intake, but in reality who's not going to eat later?
Everything in moderation!

I was thinking of what most people don't know what is in hot dogs  For instance, there is a certain percentage of rat hair and/or feces  allowed by the USDA to be in hot dogs. The hot dog you eat may or may not have this in it.

A lot of food is chemically altered these days, next time you buy some Pork Sausages have a look what % meat is in them. Chicken Breasts are only about 90% chicken as well!!

I eat whatever I happen to fancy at that particular time, fast food, healthy options, fish and chips, Macdonalds, Pork pies etc. I have the view that life's too short to worry and a little of what you fancy will do you more good than worrying about what's in every mouthful that you eat. One side of my fridge is the 'healthy' side, the other is the 'yummy' side and has been known as that for years!
At WDW some days we go healthy and go for loads of fresh fruit, Tusker house for salmon etc and on others it's burgers all the way.
