Thief Targeted Disney To Support Crack Habit

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The suspected thief who allegedly targeted Disney resorts and ran off with the cash registers is in custody. Police said the suspect had friends who would distract employees. He would run in, unhook the cash registers and run out.

Orange County deputies said 39-year-old Jamie Driscoll admitted he's a crack addict and said he targeted Walt Disney World to get cash to feed his habit.

Deputies said Driscoll hit eight Disney resorts and retail stores. In some cases, he would pry open cash registers and steal the money, but most of the time he would unhook the entire register and run out with it.

"He used various techniques, including having other people distract the employees. He'd then go in and disconnect the register, put it in a trash bag and then leave the stores," explained Crystal Candy, Orange County Sheriff's Office.

After his ninth visit to the Magic Kingdom, Disney security finally caught up with Driscoll. He was arrested by Orange County deputies in the lobby of the Pop Century Hotel.

"He did get away with it for awhile, but we worked closely with Disney security and with Disney. It was really a collaborative effort to try and catch him," Candy said.

Deputies said Driscoll not only admitted to stealing from Disney, he also said he was planning an armed robbery at the post office on Turkey Lake Road.

"He fully confessed to all these thefts and said it was because he had a crack cocaine habit. In fact, he said, had he not been caught he would've robbed a post office (Sand Lake) today," Candy said.

Driscoll is in the Orange County jail charged with grand theft.

Let's hope he gets treatment for his addiction, rather than just being locked away as punishment.

He won't. There aren't enough public funds set aside to provide comprehensive substance abuse treatments to inmates. There isn't enough for those who need treatment and who haven't broken the law.

I'm surprised he got away with as many robberies as he did.

So he will be put in jail where crack is probably more easily available than on the outside and will come out still a crack addict and commit more crimes to fund his habit.

Great.

With his confession and plans to rob the post office it seems like a cry for hlep. But it might also look like a very nice sob story. And why was it so easy to rob Disney 9 times?? You can't get away with robbing a chain of gas stations 9 times! Disney should look into this a little further:shrug:

You have to think though there are alot of people that come to and from disney all day everyday....you might not notice someone the first few times when trying to watch everyone but it will eventually catch up with you.
