nuttywith4kids,
Do you always holiday in Sept/Oct with no exceptions?
A question that comes to mind--do you think you will ever have an opportunity to go during the summertime?
UY really only comes into play if you have to cancel a reservation (and if you want to book points within the last 60 days of UY at something other than DVC. There are 8 possible UY's: Feb, Mar, Apr, Jun, Aug, Sep, Oct and Dec.
In your case, if you don't ever see yourself going during the summer, Aug or Sept. If you think there is a chance to go during the summer, Jun.
Here is a link to a detailed explanation on UY's (http://www.wdisneyw.com/forums/showthread.php?p=309550#post309550)
However, there is another little fly into the ointment because...it is May right now. If you are purchasing through Disney and you purchased Jun points right now--you probably would not receive 2005 points. If you purchased Aug or Sept points (through Disney), you would receive 2005 points and then in Aug or Sept (whichever UY you selected), you would receive your 2006 points.
I believe on your initial purchase, they will allow you to bank the points--you might want to check with your guide. They did give me a paper to sign when I first signed up to bank the points...but, I was well within the banking window when we closed...you would not be for an Aug/Sept UY (I'm not sure if they make a special exception when you first sign up or not...)

I didnt want to purchase any banked points as we already have a holiday booked for this year, I was hoping to bank this years points and take a months holiday next year. It is very unlikley that we will ever holiday in the summer because of crowd levels/heat etc. However saying that we may take the odd holiday in may.
I think that we might opt for the june use June use year or would that be silly?

nuttywith4kids,
June would not be silly from the standpoint of having a little more flexibilty in case of needing to cancel at the last minute... but...I probably would not want to give up that extra set of points...
The points are fairly easy to rent (most people are able to rent their points for a least $10.00 per point). Say you opted for a Sept UY. If you weren't going to use the first set of points, you could bank your 2005 points making them rentable anytime between Sept 1 2006-Aug 31st 2007 and use the proceeds to pay for your Annual Passes (or dining or airfare or whatever you wanted) on your next visit.
You could then bank your Sept 2006 points, making the usable between Sept 1 2007-Aug 31, 2008. Of course, when Sep 1, 2007 rolled around you would also receive your 2007 set--so, you could use double your points in a Sept 2007 visit.
(Even if you have an Aug or Sept UY, you can still use the points in the summertime. )
