Hi,If you see my photo you'll notice I'm not a sun worshipper and when I went to Orlando last year I got a red heat rash that spread very quickly in the two weeks I was there that was also very itchy .
When I got back to good old blighty in Winter mode I took some antihistimine that cleared it up after a few weeks (I think the cold helped as well !)
But,as I'll be seeing the mouse again this year I dont want the same thing to happen so I was wondering if there is a preventitive measure I could take..ie..medicine for a few weeks before I go or should I just see my GP ?

There are so many things that can cause this. material rubbing, not enough sunscreen, not enough water. the best thing would be to keep covered up as much as you can, wear a hat, wear lightweight clothing. If it's bothering you, take an antihistimine, but be sure to check with your GP that it is actually the heat. What time of year did you visit?

November,I have asthma but I felt great all the time I was there unless its linked to that !
I do sweat a lot but wore a hat and light clothing .
Funnily enough ,it started at my ankles !

November isn't really that hot in the grand scheme of things.... hummm, it could be the sweat and rubbing. at your ankle, was it around your sock like? I'd check with your GP and see if there is anything you can take

Is it a rash that looks like loads of broken capillaries and is hot to touch? I get that all up my calves, I have always linked it to sunburn or swollen ankles from the flight, have never got to the bottom of it though  and antihistamines have not worked either.

its called "prickly heat" i get it too...it is due to the heat/humidity....it usually starts at the ankles and works up to just below the knee..the itching drives me nuts.....when we were at disney last year the shop/store at all-star-movies had some hydrocortizone(sp?) cream and it was amazing it did not get rid of it but it stopped the itching :D
i'm going again next october so i am expecting it to happen again, but i am going to make sure that i have some cream handy.....

Thank you jelliebean glad to know what it is, I just put loads of solarcaine on it to help with the itching, it does look unsightly though , wish I knew how to prevent it :(.

Me too . The solarcaine does not reduce the redness but helps with the heat you get from it. I've bought factor 40 suncream for my legs this year hoping that will help .

Do your spots/rash get blister like heads? If so it may be worth visiting the doctors and asking to be blood tested for PLE. This can also appear as a chicken pox type rash. Apprently 1 in 5 people have it, but it doesn't bother most people too much. DD has just been diagnosed with this and it can be treated with steriod cream an/or photo light therapy if it is severe. Lizzie is borderline at the moment, and we are treating it with ultra high factor sunblock.

Thanks nickirick. No they don't look anything like chicken pox, what to me is more noticable is the tiny broken capillaries and then skin does feel uneven when I run my hand over it and hot (like sunburn), it is also ugly to look at :(.

Wow I thought it was only me, I never have the rash home but after 2 days in Florida I always get a rash on my legs only. It usually clears up on its own for me after a few days, but boy is it annoying. I have no idea what causes mine, because I do not get it here in PA even in the heat or humidity.

I though it was only me too, I've never noticed anyone else with it.

What you suffer from sounds like prickly head, I suffered the same symptoms for years before finally finding out that I have an allergy to the sun (a very helpful Greek doctor diagnosed this) and now use Piz Buin Allery sun cream which I can honestly say has helped me 100%. Since using this I have never, every suffered from these symptomsagain. Please give it a try....hope it works fro you too.

hydrocortisone cream

Just a quick reminder, pease don't use this for the first time when in Florida. While it is only 1% cortisone, it can still have an adverse affect if taken with some medications.

My son suffered with this when we took him to Tenerife. At the time we thought it was an allergy. Then when we went to DLP it happened again. When we got back i took him straight to the doctors who said it was prickly heat. He gave him some anti histamine tablets to take and it cleared up. When we were due to go to Florida in 2002 i went to see the doctor and asked him if it would be wise to take these tablets while we were out there to stop him getting it. He said yes and prescribed some more of the same. He took them for a week before we went and then one a day while we were there. It did the trick, he was fine . We did the same in 2004 and when he went to Germany and Venice on school trips just to be on the safe side.

Thanks FD, I am currently on antihistamines for hay-fever so I guess I will just have to continue them :)

I also take anti histamines for hay fever and the ones the doctor prescribed for my son were exactly the same so these should help you. I always continue taking my hayfever tablets in Florida just in case i get bitten or something and have never had any problems.

Well, I took my clarityn, used the Piz-Buin sun allergy lotion (factor 30) but still got the rash, I have been doing some research and found this medical journal article (http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/183_01_040705/nix10218_fm.html), this is what I have just wish I knew how to prevent it for next year

Its really embarrassing as mine spreads all around my calves, I've still got it now but its faded a bit. DH says not to worry people will just think its strawberry birthmarks , but I would love to prevent it.

thanks for the link..that sure looks like what I get...I think it is funny that they call it "disneyworld leg" as it is only when I go to disney that I get it:) ..
It would have been nice if they included what to take to prevent / cure it
thanks again,

thanks again,

I only get it in Disneyworld too, but I guess if I played golf I would get it then too . It would be so helpful if we knew how to prevent it, I've done loads of searching but can't find anything, my current university does not have a subscription to the full article but I'm switching uni's in a few weeks and the new one has a very large medical school so I hope perhaps I can get to read the full article. It would be lovely to know how to prevent it. I also got some bad bites that became quiet swollen and bruised so I went to first-aid at MGM and the nurse said I could try wearing long trousers to prevent it, but its too hot for that :(. :fingers: we find a solution to this problem.

Yeah, my mum gets that too! Her leg swelled quite badly in April, she was convinced she had a DVT and was worried about flying home. Please let us know if you find a solution!

I too have this problem and regret that I will have to deal with it again in a few weeks, mine usually starts right after we arrive and ends after a few days too, bit it is still so annoying.

Its funny while I was there I only saw one other person with it . When I went to first aid though she seemed to know what it was but not what it was called and said it was from a combination of the heat, sun and pavement plodding

I suffer from this too....I didn't realise it affects others too.....It first started 3 years ago I thought it was due a pair of new sandals I'd brought....it happened again the following year....it was quite bad last year when we went to Orlando....and now I'm just getting over it...from the so cold summer we've had here...I have it on my right foot on my ankles one side it's really crackly and the other it's more like spots which later blister....really really itchy....

triciacarole
September 3rd, 2006, 10:36
Mermaid it may not be quiet the same thing if you have got it form the UK sun. If the spots are blistering I'd go and see your GP and get it checked out.
