Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
I usually ignore the critics, but Im so sad to say they're generally right this time, as much as I wish they werent. Im depressed now and came out of the cinema feeling down because Id waited so long for this sequel, and it generally was disappointing :( Here's some bullets to explain, Im sorry that they're negative, I just feel so let down:
- Captain Jack's character in both films has now been tainted by how his character is in this movie, he's less mysterious and charismatic and charming and funny, its a real shame, he's a pale comparison to his previous incarnation, and his dialogue seems uncharacteristic (from what we saw of the character in the first film).
- Beckett seemed to look and sound almost identical to Norrington. I also didnt see the point in his assistant, he didnt seem to have a purpose.
- Where did Elizabeth get all these gimmicky sword fighting techniques?
- Pintel and Ragetti didnt need to be in the film, they served no purpose at all, not even as comic relief, it was just a case of "look, characters from the first film!"
- Bootstrap Bill seemed added as an afterthought, to be part of a storyline which just didnt happen.
- I didnt see the point in the Voodoo Lady other than to say "this person can tell the characters what they need to do and where they need to go without knowing the situation or having any logical reasons"
- The very end (I wont spoil it) didnt leave me thinking "Ooh how can that be? I must see the sequel!!", it left me thinking "no, that doesnt make sense, you cant end the film there without explaining it, thats just bad"
- If you hadnt seen the first film, a lot of this including the ending would make no sense to you at all, and it looks as though the sequel will have to carry on STRAIGHT from the end of the second one..
- The general ending wasnt a "cliffhanger" as described, it was literally "to see what happens, you have to wait for the next film". It wasnt suspenseful, it was just a case of making you wait.
- The first film had a superb storyline and great character development with some stunts and special effects thrown in which complimented it perfectly. The second film didnt go into characters as much as it simply assumed you knew them, and it seemed to be all about special effects and stunts, and building the story around to fit them, especially everything with The Flying Dutchman and its crew, which just seemed like CGI overkill, even moreso than Barbossa's crew in the first film, and yet trying to be like it a LOT.
- Some of the humour in this seemed more like Naked Gun and the such, which was slightly disappointing :/
- Too much referring to things in the first film trying to get a laugh out of mentioning them again, ie "why is the rum always gone?"
- The sword fight on the beach was the point when I went "okay this is silly", and from then on generally stopped liking the film much :(
- The film seemed to really drag on after a while :/
- The tiny extra after the credits really wasnt worth waiting through those really long credits.
ALTHOUGH...
Captain Jack did have some good lines, some of the stunts were superb, and in general the film was entertaining, it just didnt compare to the first film and SLIGHTLY tainted it.
So the film wasnt bad at all, but it just wasnt as good as the first film despite relying heavily on having seen the first film beforehand, and the characters were less interesting. My final opinion is that the first film should stand independant as it was so good. I hope the third film redeems the trilogy, I really do. :(
