Do you know if Americans need this - all International drivers will need international driving permitts and auto collision & liability insurance. Check with your insurance company and see if your coverage extends to the US.
Looking at hiring a vehicle but friend from Georgia USA will be driving.
Do you need any extra insurance.
Thanks

Not usually. Americans have individual insurances to cover renting vehicles.

Although US insurances do tend to cover the use of rental cars their coverage tends to be far less that standard UK cover or the levels we buy with SLI & CDW. If your friend had an accident their coverage may not be enough to cover the damage to another car let alone any potential personal injury claim.

Their coverage may or may not carry over. It depends on the policy as well as the company.
I don't know what the state minimums are in GA but in Florida it is a 10/20 and 10 in PIP. translation: $10,000 per person, $20,000 per accident, $10,000 in PIP medical coverage. PIP covers medical bills and lost wages (and some other items) at 80% up to $10,000 per person who does not have this coverage through his/her own policy. (so if Mister E and I were in a car accident together, we would each claim PIP from our own carrier). PD (property damage) is not always required, but most people carry a $10,000 limit. Comp/Coll is something totally different and totally optional. My last car, I didn't carry it as the yearly premium would have been more than the value of the car - not worth it when a high deductable is added in
Most Americans are very much underinsured when it comes to vehicles. Any other insurance questions, feel free to shout out.

I checked into this before I booked our car for the upcoming trip, my insurance company advised me to indeed purchase the extra coverage. They advised this because the rental companies will make you cover the entire price of the vehicle depending on the collision or type of problem, where your insurance usually has a deductable, the rental companies will make you pay the cost of the vehicle which we know could be thousands. Anyways this is what my insurance company advised and a few other things, but their insurance through the rental co also covers the theft of the vehicle and other things that your own insurance would not cover on a rental. I purchased it even if it was a few $$ more, I would rather be protected then have something happen and be responsible for a $20,000 SUV.
