How do I go about finding out what is available to rent?

You would have to find an owner who is willing to rent out their points. We don't have an area for that here though.

Yes. Some owners choose to rent their points. I don't know of anyone here who does, but I do know that other Disney related sites have forums dedicated to the topic.

How 'safe' is renting points? I am thinking about it for next year but not too sure, I'd hate to lose all that money

It all depends on how well you know and how much you trust your owner - they have final control over the reservation although they will send you a copy of it. Many people rent with no problem - ask for references from previous deals if you are considering it :)

Thanks Alec, I don't know anyone so it would be a case of doing an internet search and hoping for the best , its a pity there is not a company that does this.

I thought about it last year, but I didn't have the confidence to go through with it  It does work out a lot cheaper though - if only I was brave enough

There can't be any commercial involvement TC - it's against DVC rules, that's why it's all based on trust, you are supposed to be family or friends :)

The lady seemed really nice and she was ever so helpful, but she scared me when she said she'd made a provisional reservation for me - I panicked

We were lucky enough to rent points from friends earlier this year...they had just had their 5th daughter, and didn't know what to do with their points and my DH just happened to mention that we were going...and the rest is history! We got a great 1 br at BCV for a fraction of what it would have cost if we paid cash for it!

TC, Im renting points to stay at the BWV next July. It is totally a matter of trust.
I did it via a member from another site who I dont know. I figured that saving £1300.00 for an 8 night stay in a 1 bed was kinda worth the risk.
Ive ben in contact via email and I got a copy of the ressi with confirmation no.
Only problem was that the DVC had included the renter in the ressi along with our family, I emailed the renter and he's sorting it for me.
But it really is taking a chance.

Thanks Steery, I've posted on another forum what I am looking for but I'm still scared .

Be very careful. You are right to be very concerned. There is some risk to the renter of the points too, but the majority of risk is on the person paying the owner.
Try to determine if the person you are renting from has any sort of reputation and if that reputation is a good one.
Remember, it's no savings if someone takes your money and doesn't deliver. You'd have very little if any recourse. None at all through WDW or DVC.

Sorry, I miscalculated. The difference between booking direct with Disney and renting points is actually £822.00 for my dates in a 1 bed at BWV

I looked at it and it is roughly about £1,000 but then if we were to get the free dining there would not be such a big difference

TC it sounds like it would worry you an awful lot if you were to rent. If there is not that much of a difference when you factor in the free DDP maybe you shouldn't try it - save yourself the stress.
Me - Im prppared to take a chance. If it doesnt work out Ill be very annoyed. It will have been a VERY expensive lesson.
I look at it kinda the same as buying something off ebay

I've only made two purchases from e-bay both under £4, sums me up really :rotfl:
