Anyone got any idea how much it roughly costs to fill a full sized car with fuel? I am about to book our car hire and am trying to decide if it is worth going for an all-inclusive option or not.

over in the states, a lot less than the hire company charge you. you return it full, well worth it

I know its tons cheaper in the US but I can't decide if I should go with the Alamo all-inclusive or the Alamo Gold. It would only be DH driving so the extra charge for the Gold would just be for a tank of fuel.

the one time i paid for fuel at the carhire it was over $60 for the tank, a rip off

When you book over here you are given the option of Alamo all-inclusive or Alamo Gold, all-inclusive includes taxes etc but Alamo Gold includes gas and additional drivers as well as all the taxes etc, I just really need to know if it is worth going for the Gold. When we get the all-inclusive we opt to return the car full as yes it is a rip-off paying the rental agencies fuel prices.

if it was me i'd go for the gold

You will find that if you haven't paid for the gold option you will have to leave a cc imprint at the desk and they will try and talk you into pre-paying anyway
I prefer to pay for it all upfront, it's only Chris that drives, but I am added as an extra driver as well, just in case something happens. I wouldn't like it but if needs must then I'd do it. The other thing is when you hand the car back you just leave the keys you haven't got to wait or worry about fuel etc. But then that's just me a worry wort
Is there much difference between the 2 options

Oh I think you need to be on the insurance Trish. What about when 'they' are all driving us mad and you and me want to escape for some retail therapy?

I have been fiddling with costings, for 1 weeks hire its £15 more for the gold, for 2 weeks its £30 more. You don't get an extra tank of fuel so I guess most of the cost must be for the additional driver .

IF you purchase the initial tank of fuel from US Rental car companies the cost is considerably less than if you wait to return it to them and let them refill it. If I don't do the upfront purchase then I always refill it myself rather than pay the exhorbitant cost of the agency doing it.
If you do purchase the initial tank then you can return it to them empty at NO ADDITIONAL cost. For me it normally depends upon how much driving I intend to do.

John do you have a full sized car? If so can I be cheeky and ask how much it costs to fill it up? I am thinking if we do it ourselves and return the car full it may cost less

I have an SUV, about the same size tank as a full size. With today's gas prices averaging about $2.35/gallon here in this area it costs me about $50.00 to fill it up from the 1/4 tank left mark. However, that is also with mid-grade gasoline. Regular prices are about 20 cents per gallon cheaper and unless you get a luxury full size you can probably get by on regular.

Thanks John, I'll go and do my sums :D

I've just booked an Alamo car with our package and gone for the fully inclusive rather than Gold option. As I am the only driver it isn't worthwhile for our party to go for the gold option. I don't think that the Alamo Gold offer is as good as the Dollar Platinum insurance which has a few other extras in the cost.
As for filling up, if you are going to be heading back to the airport from the WDW then there is a filling station just off I535 before you go onto the greenway that is always fine for filling up and leaving you a full tank. If you are going up from I-Drive then there are a couple of filling stations just before you turn off for the airport so there is no need to pay hire companies extortionate fuel charges.

I have a 12 gallon tank and it averages me $25 or so to fill up from empty.
Gas onsite this past weekend was $2.25 a gallon

Hi, petrol at the moment is $2.26 a gallon. Dollar did not give us the option of returning the car full. We got a bit confused this time at Disney - you have to prepay for fuel before you can fill up - so you have in $ not gallons.

You can take a random amount ($40) and bring it in. If you don't reach that amount, you go get the change

Dollar did not give us the option of returning the car full.
If you already had it included in your hire package that would make sense but otherwise they should have given you the option. Normally they tell you that you must either bring it back with a full tank or pay for equivalent at their (high) rates.

Hi,
We found last year (june 2006) that for our full size car, it cost us just under $40 to fill the tank. Fuel prices are much lower now though, I'm sure we paid $2.89 per gallon at that time.
We always book through auto-europe.com
They offer the "all inclusive" and "gold" packages. (oh, and with the gold package with extra drivers and prepaid fuel, you return the car empty)
And they will price match every time, but their prices are generally quite competitive.
Hope you get booked up.

We had Dollar in July 2006. It wasn't the Platinum upgrade and at the desk inside the airport they charged me $80 or so for a full tank before we left.
The car (http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/5615/florida2006164mj9.jpg)was a 4 wd Dodge I think (not sure)
Next time i'll definitely upgrade :)

I managed to get a great deal with Airmiles yesterday on a fully inclusive rate with Alamo, I do have to fuel it myself but will return it full so there shouldn't be a charge :).

They might charge you for the full tank at the desk TC before you leave. Like they did with me.

I hope not I shall try and be forceful when I say no :)

I can be forceful but I wasn't given a choice.
He just said it was $80 or so for the tank of fuel and to bring it back empty.
There was no "would you like to pre-pay for a tank of fuel sir" option.

We just got back and we rented a Dodge Grand Caravan, 4litre V6 - from empty - "how we prayed we would get to the fuel station !!" LOL it was $36. We booked with National and we had a great experience with them, very smooth collection and return and we also got to choose from the parking lot which car we wanted !

Ooops I typed that earlier reply wrong - quite misleading - we had a full tank of fuel when we collected it, the filling up was a few weeks later, not just after collection ! We only filled up once during our stay of four weeks, our hotel was about 10/12 miles from disney parks and we went out every day either to the park or to the shopping malls - the car didn't drink up as much fuel as I thought it would - $72 for a month is not bad - I think.
