$499 for the 4gig with a 2yr cingular contract, $599 for the 8gig
I'm hoping we'll be able to buy them without a contract but any way you look at it yeah, they're pricey

Saw it on TV this morning, I don't think I will be getting one as I usually use my phone for phone calls and texting

OOOh, I like! :D I still have my 8800 and still love it. It's the longest i've ever kept a phone. Ours are paid for by work, so I don't want anything that involves a new contract either. :hehe:

I've always liked the 8*** series by nokia.... they've been the phones I've kept the longest too.
My only problem with the 8800 was that it's hard for me to press the bottom keys because the case gets in the way a bit (fixed in the 8800 revision they brought out later).
I'm hoping they bring out a redesigned 8800 at some point

That's waht I imagined the next iPod would look like - a much bigger screen, so that you can actually watch stuff on them...
Any news on when they're actually due out over here?

Q4 so oct/nov/dec but I know they're trying to push that earlier

I saw this on a news report last night. I immediately wondered what you would think of the device, Keith! :D
It's supposed to make smart phone technology as easy to use as Macs (as compared to PCs) are.
Ummmm...where are the keys to dial?
It's too pricey for me at $500 too, but it will drop in price as it ages.
Keith
January 10th, 2007, 14:51
yeah I don't know what I think yet... could go either way.
It lacks 3g and a few other bits, I dont normally like dialling on "on screen" keyboards but then again Apple do tend to make things easy and nice to use.
You're right, it'll come down

January 10th, 2007, 14:56
Ah. It's a touch style screen for the keyboard/dialing features then? I'm not sure I'd like that, but I'd surely try it. :D
Suppose they'd give me one to test market? Give being the operative word there.

Oh. OH! Oh my. Well, errrmmm... is Steve hiring? :D
Keith
January 10th, 2007, 18:45
Well it won't fail, it's from Apple so it'll look wonderful and will grab people who want an ipod and phone combined.
BUT it's far from perfect! no 3g, gsm only, no keys making it much harder to compose email/texts, poor battery life
Motorola have the razr which is still a great looking phone if just a bit too common these days.... some work on their user interface and it'll be apple who'll have to worry

yeah truly stupid ommission, anyone thinking form over function? I bet Mister-E is feeling better now ;)
Pretty silly to pre-announce a good 5months before its earliest availability too! It was quite a disappointing keynote speech, kinda seemed like they didnt have anything else to say so had to do the iphone a bit early

They wanted to create a buzz about it and get the word out - I'd say they've done it.
It also, to my knowledge, doesn't have speakerphone or bluetooth. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Keith - unfortunately for me, tech guru's like yourself will notice the glaring omissions, but the average user has never even heard the word 3G and couldn't care less if it was missing.

Ah, but we have in the UK. I'm just a 'user' and I know what 3G is.

yeah sure but if you can't buy it who cares? Always seems to me to be a bad idea to whip up a frenzy then give people time to find the flaws... you want them online and ordering the thing whilst you're still telling them how good it is <G>
I don't know many people who will think ooooo I'll wait 5 months for that one instead of getting a motorola today

Kinda, and I know what you mean, but if that really were completely true then the cell operators wouldn't have spent billions on the licenses for 3G
It's the old marketing problem, technical features v practical benefit. If motorola and networks wanted to, they could make "fast internet" almost a must have feature by the time the iphone came out..

daft really!
The networks really want us to use it for video calls but Im not sure I really want people to see me when I call (and vice versa I'm sure)
but it IS really useful to be able to see websites at a decent speed, pull emails down and so on.

They replaced 3G capability with WiFi built in. Thus, the browser included in the handset can access wireless networks in coffee shops, hotels, libraries, etc, and get online. Granted, they need an unsecured connection, and you can't get it everywhere, but that's how they justify not including 3G.

I like the fact my 3G is a secure connection checking my bill out at the moment, i know a lot of people over here have been put off cause it isnt 3G

I cant imagine it REALLY launching without secure wifi....... but even if it does, wifi isnt everywhere and thats why we need 3G :/ I can't believe they've missed it out

I heard on the news that there's an exclusive contract with Cingular for the new phone. Which means that if you want it, then you are only going to able to use Cingular as your carrier. What happened to the old days of picking out your carrier and then deciding which phone to buy
If you look at this picture you can see the Cingular icon in the upper corner http://www.apple.com/iphone/phone/

I like it, personally, i wouldn't buy it though.
Looks very clunky, yet still, clean.....
I heard some people in currys talking about it yesterday...

And now Cisco is suing Apple because they had registered the name first. Here (http://apnews.excite.com/article/20070111/D8MJ5E2G0.html)
Keith
January 11th, 2007, 18:16
yeah now what's interesting about that is, Apple knew about it and were in talks with cisco for months before but just decided to launch it anyway.
So they knew but didn't care? just wanted publicity?
I mean seems like a bit of a slam dunk case for cisco unless there's something we don't know.
I'd be happy to see Apple get stuffed on this one.. they've repeatedly gone after companies and even individuals for daring to use i*anything* or even people who've commented favourably about apple on their websites who've been warned about using the "apple" name.
I can't help thinking it ALL about generating publicity for a phone which isnt out for 5 months in order to kill the market for other phones :(

Don't they get sued every now and again when apple records wants money? and they also got sued by creative.
God, Apple just doesn't care

Funny, every phone we make has an "i" in front of it...
i730, i860, i930, i870... Every single one, since i500...
Apple has never sued Motorola to my knowledge...

I suppose to be honest, they seem to go after i*productname* not inumber which is probably so generic they wouldn't stand a chance and they know it

It's really really nice, but it's sorta like wearing a giant "rob me" sign..
