Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson showed that he does have the winning game plan as his new movie, Disney's "The Game Plan", opened as the top movie at the box office last weekend.
Studio estimates put "The Game Plan" at $22.7 million, beating out other weekend contenders such as "The Kingdom", starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, and "Resident Evil: Extinction" which debuted at number one last weekend.
Disney was able to end the dry spell of family-friendly movies in theaters and pulled in an audience of mainly children and parents with a PG rating.
"There was definitely pent-up demand for people who don't necessarily want to go to the heavy R-rated films," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney. "The entire general audience has been underserved lately."
Although Johnson is most notable known for his role as an action star, the actor was able to widen his audience base as he showed off his softer side on screen.
"The Game Plan" chronicles the life of a bachelor football player whose life is turned around with the arrival of a daughter he never knew he had.
