There seems to be a fairly unanimous(e!) feeling on these boards that the car seats that can be rented from the rental companies are not always in the best condition.

Travelling with 3-yo daughter next March. She has her own seat booked on the Virgin flight. She would undoubtedly sleep better in her car seat.
Questions - do Virgin allow you to take carseats on board? Does the average carseat fit in an economy seat? Presumably, they can't be used during take-off and landing, so where do they go, cos it's not going to fit in an overhead locker!! And finally, has anyone had any problems with US cars when it comes to fitting the seat that they have lugged over the pond?

Experiences and advice gratefully recieved. Thank you.

I doubt it very much. I would give them a call to ask as they are generally very helpful. I would say that Virgin are very child friendly when it comes to entertainment, I wouldn't travel to Florida with any other company because of that.

Here, if the car seat doesn't work with the plane seat, you can have it checked to holding right then and there (similar to a stroller process). There are indicators on the car seats in this country to let you know that they work with airline seats.

It's a dreadful pain to lug, but having done it, I'd not do anything else other than bring my own car seat that the child was most familiar with.

The car seat can be placed in hold baggage and normally does not count against the number of bags you have checked.
