Breaking News: Disney to spend $1.1B on California Adventure
The Walt Disney Co. is looking to inject life into its California Adventure theme park, to the tune of $1.1 billion, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
The California-themed park sits next to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and opened in 2001. The park has been dogged by critics since its opening, due to the lack of a "Disney" feel, with the park coming across as generic.
The $1.1 billion price tag, the largest such renovation to any Disney park, is slightly above the estimated $1 billion it took to build the park initially. According to the Journal report, the park will be renovated somewhat in the image of its famous neighbor, with references to company founder Walt Disney, especially his actions after moving to the Los Angeles area in the 1920s.
Among the attractions will be a replica of the Carthay Circle theater, where "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" premiered in 1937. The park will also be expanded by 12 acres, with more rides being offered in the theme of recent Disney successes such as "Cars" and the "Toy Story" series.
The parks fall under the umbrella of the Disney Parks and Resorts unit of Burbank's Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS).
