As per usual, we will be hiring a car for the holiday next year, but as we are cruising this time (yippee!!), are we best to hire the car for the full two weeks, or should we see if we can hire a car for collection at the airport, to be returned at DTD the evening before we sail, and then resume car hire when get back off the ship for the remainder of the holiday, returning the car to the airport. I'm not sure if a hire car can be left at the resort while we are away. DH is not keen on driving to the port, I think he wants the full Disney experience!
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks!

I would NOT keep the car during the cruise. I don't know what Disney's regulations are regarding keeping the car at the resort but since you won't be officially registered at the resort you won't have a valid parking pass for it. And why pay for something you aren't using?

:iagree: ..and if you did decide to drive to Port Canaveral you would also have to pay a parking fee for the duration of your cruise.
You could always pick up a rental car after your cruise near to the terminal [a courtesy bus will take you to the car rental location] and you could drop it off at the airport after your vacation.

You may find that booking the car for the duration of your stay is a better deal than having 2 separate reservations. Also, I would cost transfers versus parking at the port. I know Disney charge $69 per person which mounts up when there are a few of you. Our cheapest option by a long way was to keep the car, drive ourselves to the port and pay the $12 per day to park and it also saved a lot of messing about.

The other advantage to that is you can leave extra bags in the car - we did our cruise at the end of the holiday so we only took what we needed onto the ship and left all our dirty stuff in cases in the car boot. :)

When we went on the 4-day crusie, we drove our hire car down to Port Canaveral and left it in the secure parking lot. It saved a lot of hassle with returning cars, lugging bags on and off buses and it meant we could arrive earlier than all those taking coach transfers, thus getting cheked-in and onboard before the crowds. Im not sure wether it worked out cheaper or not but it was certainly more convenient for us.
With that said, we're doing the 7-day next year and are changing tactic slightly, as 7 days car hire plus 7 day parking would definitely be pricier and a bit of a waste. Still planning to drive down but will drop off the hire car at the port. Will then hire another car upon our return, although that'll only be for the day as we fly out that evening, however it means we can nip back to DTD and get some last minute shopping done :hehe:

You guys are fantastic! Wonderful suggestions!:noworthy:
I think we'll be going with leaving the car at the port, but I don't know if we're brave enough to leave the laundry in the car.... :gairy:
