DH and I are celebrating 25 years of wedded bliss this October(no sniggering kids!) and I was thinking of this resturaunt(sp?) and the fantasmic show as a treat for all of us. Is this a good idea?

Thanks!

Wellllll it's probably the best food in mgm, and doing the package definitely means less waiting than not doing it, but I thin brown derby is the worst package to do :/ It's expensive for what you get and no discounts (like dde) because it's already a package.

I am glad the Keith said that because I hate to say anything negative about Disney but the truth is other than the Cobb salad and cool beverage:wink: I think that food at Brown Derby is overrated and therefore it isn't a great value. You could do better at one of the hotel restaurants.

We did this package in June and thought the food was really good - especially the cheesecake. The only downside was that you did feel rushed which you don't want if it's a special meal. On the other hand I would do it again.

I want to clarify my prior post, in my opinion the food at Brown Derby isn't BAD but as for having to use 2 credits on your meal plan or to pay $ to dine there it isnt worth it. I think that there are better places to dine (Yachtsmen,Boma, Jiko, Artist Point, Citricos, Narcooses Victoria and Alberts). Ialso think these other restaurants are more romantic.

Are you definitely eating at MGM that day Cathy?

If so, then I have heard the Brown Derby is the best place to eat (though we've not tried it!!) However having read other reviews, they generally point out that it's nice but you pay more for what it is

If you want to do it just for the fantasmic side of things, then I'd suggest going to another restaurant and heading to fantasmic after because the seating offered by the package isn't all that special! We did the package (with Hollywood and Vine) and the seating was ok, it was nice not to wait, but we thought we could have gotten better seats if we'd waited anyway!

For suggestions of other restuarants for the special meal outside of MGM, I'd definitely recommend California Grill at the contempory... just a great place all round!!! Others that we have heard great things about but have not been to (yet ) are Citricos at the GF and Jiko at AKL. Artists Point at WL also sounds good!

yep this is spot on IMHO... brown derby is a mediocre "park style" restaurant asking for prices as if it was a top quality place.

We just did the derby fantasmic package last week and it was actually more expensive than other MUCH better meals.

I think the package is a good idea, but better to do one of the others, hollywood and vine or Mama melroses or something just so you don't pay over the odds for the package.

Since this is a 25th Anniversary trip I would skip the Brown Derby Fantasmic package and either do Mama Melrose or Hollywood and Vine for the Fantasmic package and do something more special for the anniversary dinner. We have eaten at the Brown Derby several times and while the food is good I do think for the portion sizes, especially the Filet Mignon, are way too small for the price.

Still dithering! Butterhead, its going to be tough for a romantic meal with the 3 kids in tow, but I'm now thinking about either Yachtsmens or Artist Point. Not sure about MGM park for that day, but I am trying to sort out my dining options well in advance, instead of winging it as we usually do.

USCWest, the Yachtsmen is your fault, your review on the dining boards made me hungry!

Cathy
In the Beach Club there is a baby sitting facility that you could drop your kids off before dinner and have a quiet dinner. We have done this twice in the past when we ate the Yachtsman Steakhouse.

On our last visit we dined at quite a few disney restaurants and in my opinion the best was a toss up between Le Cellier and the Brown Derby. We booked the Fantasmic package but didnt get to see Fantasmic due to the weather. If i had to choose one I think it would have to be the Brown Derby, we had a little booth and the food was fantastic with great service and we didnt feel rushed at all.
