According to a USA Today report, beginning 29 January, Southwest will drop their free baggage limit from 3 bags to 2. The third bag will cost $25.00, Bags 4-9 $50.00 each and every bag above 9 $110 each. Currently they charge $50.00 for each bag 4-12 and $110 for each bag above 12. The maximum weight of 50 pounds (23kg) per bag is unchanged.

Not really huge in the grand scheme of things since the majority of airlines have the same requirements (and $25 for a third bag isn't bad at all)

It is if you use Southwest to travel to bowling tournaments. :D

What's happening to SW? Their prices have skyrocketed and now this! I can't seem to find a good fare on SW and I used to all the time. Their new fare system stinks and I only ever see web specials about 2x per week.
I'll definately be paying to fly other carriers. SW just isn't worth the $$ anymore.

Ugh. I tend to travel heavy, so this is a problem for me. I've already had to pay for excess weight (and that on the outbound leg!) a couple of times and I really don't like that at all!
Southwest is heading toward one of the more expensive options.

I thought there was a special allowance for sports equiptment? Not any more. :(
I think it's the weight thing Yep that is part of it especially since they dropped back to 50lb. A bowling ball by itself can weigh up to 16lb. I used to carry a 3 ball bag and a 2 ball bag when the weight limit was 70lb.

Depends on the tournament and expected lane conditions. I have seen some bowlers, especially the really good ones, with 12 or more bowling balls.

This puts Southwest pretty much totally in line with other airlines Tink. Southwest was the last one as far as I know who still allowed three checked bags
