Ok so I have just had my car hire voucher through and on it it states that
"FUEL TANK CHARGED AT START OF RNTAL PLEASE RETURN EMPTY AS NO REFUNDS ARE GIVEN"
I thought it is usually is either given empty (almost) and you return it in the same state or full and you return it full.
Does anyone know how much they charge for giving you a tank of petrol....just thinking it may be worth me upgrading the insurance so I get the free tank as well as additional drivers (then my dad can use it if he needs to)

Almost every car rental agency in the states will give you a full tank of gas at the start of the rental. They will then give you the option of returning it full, or pre-paying the cost of a tank of gas, normally at a MUCH cheaper rate than if if you didn't return it full, but not necessarily at a cheaper rate than the going cost of gasoline. If you don't select the prepay option but then return it with less gas than when they gave it to you they charge an exhorbitant rate to refuel.

We have always got a full tank and returned it empty, as stated on your voucher, that is your tank of petrol. It is easier that way as you don`t have to bother filling up on the way to the airport.

shoot, i'm surprised they are saying you can return it empty, the last few times we rented a car, we have to make sure it was full when we returned it or they charged like $2 over the average price to fill it up!
Tishy, congrats on your wedding, I bet it is going to be so wonderful!

If you have the top insurance package (Platinum?) then that includes the free tank of fuel which is why you can return it empty. I wouldn't recommend running it that close mind you - I'd rather leave a few drops in there to be on the safe side:D

When I have to return the tank full I always use the 7/11 gas station at the junction of 535/536 which is far enough away not to be too pricey and is close enough to not use enough fuel for them to charge you.

I read that as they will charge you for the fuel in the tank and you have to bring it back empty, so you get hit with 15 gallons of full price fuel before you leave the airport.
