View Full Version : Entertaining Kids on the Flight??

We're travelling to Orlando in October with our 2 dd's who are just turned 5 & 2. Assuming Virgin don't change our seats we've got a one of the 2 at the back of the flight and the 3 in front of that - so I can sit with the kids. I can't bear being in the 4 across the middle so this was the easiest way - having them both with me will stave off a meltdown from someone i'm sure - you just know if it was 2 & 2 that they'd both want to sit with me .
We did travel 18months ago when they were 6 months and 3 & a half but it was easier as little one slept most of the time and we had much more room due to the bulk head seats.

I was wondering what everyone does to entertain the kids? I've got them both a roll along bag (peppa pig & undecided yet) each filled with things wrapped up for each of them - i'll copy Kate's idea and let them have a present each hour or so (or until I can no longer stand the whining  - I guess I could well be all opened before we get past Ireland :rotfl:).

Up to now i've got:
Colouring in (both)
Stickers (both)
Mini-Magna Doodle(dd2)
Scrolly Puzzle(dd2)
New Cuddly Toy from Disney Store(both- what's the bet they both want the same one on opening??)
homework work books (dd5) - not coz i'm mean but because she loves doing these
tinkerbell reading books x2 (dd5) & read to books x3 (dd2)
Make your own Lonney Tunes Masks (both)
Nemo Activity book (dd2)
Mini pots of play doh (both)
DD5 will also have her Leapster & DS Lite.
Can anyone think of anything else - inexpensive but entertaining. I'm more thinking of dd2 - I think dd5 will be fine - she'll probably watch the kids movie too.
I'm only really worried about flying out there - coming home is a night flight so i'll pack a few things but not loads.
Any ideas??

You have given me some great idea's for me DD(2)'s bag!! I also intend to get her a viewmaster with some princess reels from Toys r us. She always asks to look at them when we're in there, but she doesn't own one yet. If you don't know what I mean, they sort of look like binoculars but you look in them to see pictures and when you push a button, the picture changes I'm sure they'll be on the website.

Ooh looks like you'll be there the same time as us!!!!!!!!!!

looks like you've done a great job!!
maybe suckers for take-off to help with the pressure changes..
maybe a cd/mp3 with their favorite songs? I've done that with my dd before..
that's all I can think of! lol

Oh yeah - forgot that - we've actually got dd5 a pink mickey shaped MP3 player which we've loaded wth all HM/ HSM & Disney songs - got it off ebay for £8 - from Hong Kong so probably not the real deal but it works and she'll be thrilled . DD2 can also use it if DD5 is otherwise occupied but I don't think she'd use it often enough to warrant one of her own!

yeah she's a little young... I want to say kate was 3 when we used a cd player to help keep her occupied on a flight to Seatle. She really like the headphone, it helped her ears too!
Hey for that price you'll certinally get your use out of it!!

A couple of free things to remember. First of all, get them to bed late and up early on the night/morning before the flight so they get some sleep on the plane to help address the time difference. The other thing not to be underestimated with little ones is the amount of interest they have in walking around the cabin - especially the 2 year old. I've done numerous laps of various transatlantic flights with my kids when they were toddlers as they like to see what is going on.

The other practical advice is to go to Boots once you've got through security and buy some bottles of ribena or whatever similar juice drinks they like. That way you can be sure that they will drink enough on the flight so don't get grouchy by being dehydrated.
