Booking a hotel room vs renting points?

Just thinking about our December trip... and I started wondering whether instead of just booking a hotel room, would it make any kind of sense at all to just rent enough dvc points for a week or two from someone?

I've no real idea of the costs or practicality of doing this but on first glance it would appear we could get a one bedroom with points quite reasonably which would be nicer than a hotel room.

Any thoughts?

OK, so I am by far NOT the authority on DVC or renting points...but we have considered doing this in the fall and so far this is what I have learned...most points rent for around $10/point, keep in mind that if you stay during weekends...it cost you substantially more points...(we're talking double)

SO! If you look at a standard week in December, say 6-13 at the Boardwalk, one bedroom standard view, you are looking at 162 points (16/weekdays,41/weekends) at $10/point...that would run you roughly $1620.

Not sure if you have this link or not...but if you click here you can play around with point cost for different resorts of different levels...

If you are looking for a place to rent points you might want to try here.

I do agree however, I think it would be much more comfortable than a standard hotel room...

Ok, that's really about all I know...now back to your regularly scheduled experts....

Keithop, one of the biggest dangers to renting DVC is that a lot of folks end up becoming owners--(Resistance is futile! ) I think a 1BR DVC is definately more comfortable than a regular room. Remember though, if you are renting points you do not have daily maid service (unless you pay extra) and the maid does Towels and empties trash every 4 days.

On the downside: a lot of folks book the first two weeks of Dec at the 11month booking window and the BWV standard view rooms are generally the rooms in the highest demand (because they cost the least amount of points). But, maybe this far out you would be able to find something. Some options: if there isn't any availablity at BWV, have the DVC owner make a ressie for OKW and waitlist for BWV.
Or, (referring to the link that Miracle gave you), there might be someone who has already made a ressie for your dates and for some reason has to cancel.

Good luck!

Thanks both :-)

I'll have a look around at the adverts and see what there is! I do rather fancy the bcv being so close to my fave park.

Re: ownership... one reason is for me to try it out before buying... I've been so close to signing and kinda hoping it would push me over the edge

GO FOR IT! GO FOR IT! GO FOR IT!
Hahaha,

I just wanted to say how much we enjoy our DVC membership and if you have to, try it out first. Just remember that the money you spend renting points could be your down payment on the membership and the points would be yours.

Bye
