United Airlines

Another question if its ok.
Has anyone flown with United out of LHR, would rather have gone with American but the price was to good to miss. Not bothered my self but the birthday girl (11) wants to know what the entertainment is like, leg room wont affect her but what about the grown ups! Thanks again.

Re: United Airlines

Thaks for that, we are flying the same route with quite a layover whats Dulles like or is the clue in the name of the airport. I have only been to the US on my own so with the wife and an 11 year old the journey needs to be as smooth as possible.

Thanks

Here is a link to the Washington Dulles Airport website. I haven't flown into or out of there in years, but it was one of the few U.S. airports where the Concorde could land and take off.

Hopefully DCfromVA or WDWGrandma or USCWest will be along with comments soon.

Re: United Airlines

Dulles International Airport, named after John Foster Dulles, a former Secretary of State opened in 1959. It has grown from being a small International Airport to one of the largest in the country. Until recently to get from the main terminal to what they call the mid-field terminals you had to ride a shuttle bus. Now they have underground walkways, at least as far as the B terminal. And by 2009 will have an undergound train system. Almost all of the airport services are beyond security and you are afforded some great views of planes landing and taking off. They are currently building additional runways and last year opened up an extension of the National Air & Space Museum on airport property.

Re: United Airlines

Great Information. As per my earlier thread, we are thinking of going BMI/United from Manchester to Orlando in October 2005. We were not impressed by Virgin when we went with them this year.

I have flew with BMI on many occasions (Gold Star Alliance Card) and always get an excellent service. It is the transfer at either Chicago/Washington, airport security and the level of service with United on the internal leg down to Orlando.

Re: United Airlines

You should contact United and see if they have any economyPLUS seats left on your flights, this offers 34inch legroom at no extra cost, the service is offered to Milliage Plus members etc first, but quite often there are seats left for allocating to normal flyers. United economy offer a very nice service, a lot better standard of service than Virgin do but the only word of warning is that United's 747's do NOT have seat-back TV's, only their 777 or 767 aircraft do, so it might be worth checking with United what aircraft your currently scheduled on. There entertainment program has won several awards for many years all of which can be found at www.united.com. If you have any further questions about united you can PM me

Re: United Airlines

Just remember that when you change planes in BWI you'll be flying a domestic flight. From what I hear from you guys about international flights, you'll have very little amenities. Food is a joke if the airline even feeds you. In flight entertainment? Maybe if your lucky you'll get a movie on the drop down screens. (JetBlue and Song both have satellite TV in each seatback and they're considered "value" airlines). I'm 5'6" and I sometimes feel cramped when flying, especially when I'm putting a backpack under the seat.

Re: United Airlines

Thanks.

That was our biggest worry. As we will be using air miles, we should get an upgrade to economyplus on the initial flight with BMI from Manchester to Washington. Also hopefully use their lounges, if we can smuggle the kids in! However, after waiting 2hrs for the connection, it sounds like we will be crammed into the "low cost airline" down to MCO. I think they use airbus on this route. But as it is only just over 2 hrs might not be that bad, we went to Barcelona last weekend with Easyjet, who use the same aircraft and is wasn't that bad for leg room, but no entertainment.

Might just swing the balance back to using Virgin again and hope they improve the service and get new aircraft on the MAN-MCO route.

But, then again the flights will be free (airmiles) hence cannot complain too much.

Re: United Airlines

Try Southwest on a cross-country flight, Kevin! Talk about no amenities--including no assigned seats! I have a 5-hour flight to WDW, but I'm short and the lack of leg room doesn't bother me as long as the person in front of me doesn't recline his/her seat!

But it's cheap and makes the extra holiday or two feasible.
